federal tax credit

You probably haven’t thought about your home heating system lately. In the middle of a scorching summer, that’s the last thing on the minds of homeowners. But autumn isn’t far away, and with it, the massive heating bills that have become all too common in Pittsburgh PA.

The good news is that there is a federal tax credit that can save you up to $1,500 on the cost of a new furnace, heat pump, water heater, or air conditioner.

The bad news is that you have to act fast – it expires on Dec. 31, 2010, just a few months from now.

The Federal Tax Credits for Consumer Energy Efficiency provide homeowners with a 30 percent tax credit on a variety of energy-efficient products, capped at $1,500.

The Best Way to Save

For most Western Pennsylvanians, the best way to utilize that tax credit will be to invest in a better home heating system. Up to half of the money the average person puts toward his or her utility bills goes to heating costs.

Installing a new heating system now not only gets you the federal tax credit, but can also slash your heating bills this winter.

If your furnace is more than 15 years old, it’s probably spewing out money almost as fast as it emits heat. You’ve seen that in your monthly bill. Even if it’s relatively newer, the experts recommend having your furnace evaluated for efficiency and a possible tune-up.

Others Ways to Save

If your furnace is up to par, you can still take advantage of the tax credit by examining other appliances in your home. The credit also covers central air conditioners, which, as you have likely noticed, are a major drain on summer electric bills. Water heaters and other appliances are also included.

It’s important to note that not all Energy Star products are eligible. The requirements differ with each type of product. However, Gillece Services carries a full line of qualifying products, from furnaces to air conditioners to water heaters and more. Our energy efficiency specialists can help you find the right product for your home and for your budget.

Gillece Services is also a registered state contractor that can help you qualify for the Pennsylvania Home Heating Equipment Rebate Program.
